For me it's all about balance and compromise. I love eating out, experiencing new restaurants, revisiting old favorites, and reveling in the experience of sharing a meal. But, it is essential to set boundaries within yourself and not let indulges and splurges supersede hard work and dedication. Research shows that people consume at least 200 more calories when eating out. You also lose control over salt and fat intake. In terms of taste, that is not always a bad thing. A very happy Monday to you Vegheads. Holiday festivities are in full swing and practicing the art of moderation and balance never seemed more critical then it does now. The past few weeks have been inundated with festive meals, from birthday celebrations, to travel, and a multitude of holiday gatherings. Like most people, I am confronted with that inner dilemma, wanting to indulge and embrace all the deliciousness of the season, but knowing how indulgence after indulgence can affect me on the inside and out. There is something to be said for the tranquility that cloaks the city during the last month of summer. Some may feel like “the leftovers”- left behind while the “others” leave in droves, a mass exodus to the various summer retreats. I typically find solace and comfort in the quiet and serenity of it all. It’s the feeling that somehow you are in on a little secret - that the city, which at times succumbs to lunacy and haste, has a softer and more mellow side. It is during the fleeting month that I find myself sauntering into a typically packed and popular restaurant at 8 p.m. on a Saturday night or get lost among the townhouses of the West Village without the droves of tourists trailing at my heels.
